Javier Smith has been serving on the The Community Center board since 2014 but has been serving the LGBTQ+ community for decades.
He grew up in North Idaho/Eastern Washington and was involved with college and local queer advocacy groups in Pullman, WA and Moscow, ID in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
He moved to Boise in 1993 where he joined the board of the queer advocacy group Your Family, Friends, and Neighbors, inc. He helped with Boise Pride, The Anti-Violence Project, Diversity Newspaper and other projects of YFFN.
In 1994 he helped defeat the anti-gay Proposition One ballot initiative. In 1995 he helped found the Idaho Family Project which has now evolved into Youth Alliance for Diversity (YAD), a project of The Community Center.
In 2003, he helped start the HIV testing/advocacy group Allies Linked for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS (a.l.p.h.a.) where he still serves on the board in an advisory capacity.
He currently keeps The Center open every Saturday and hosts a monthly game night at The Center.
